An eventful summer calls for a couple of exciting updates to news we shared last spring: In this space, I told you about a conversation with five Indianapolis mayors that took place on campus March 11, and of my announcement that evening that UIndy was creating an Institute for Civic Leadership & Mayoral Archives. I’m pleased to report that over the summer, we unveiled a $7.5-million fundraising campaign to provide a suitable home for the institute and archives in Krannert Memorial Library and to support their ongoing operations.
Present and former trustees have seeded the campaign with more than $1 million in pledges, for which we are most appreciative. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but their support gets this campaign off and running. Also last spring, Portico’s cover featured a photo inside the dome of the Athletics & Recreation Center, which had just been inflated. The ARC will be pressed into service as a practice facility for the NFC champions competing in the 2012 Super Bowl in Indianapolis. In July, green turf was installed wall to wall, transforming the interior into a temporary football field in preparation for Super Bowl XLVI. (After it has served the NFC champs, the turf will go to Arsenal Technical High School’s football field, and we’ll finish the interior of the dome for intramural sports as originally planned.)
I hope Indianapolis-area alumni will be able to join us for the dedication of the dome at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 1, right before our first home football game of the new season in Key Stadium.
See you there!
