Spring Classnotes: 1930 to 1969

Absalom Wilson Jr. ’33 died September 21. He taught and coached basketball, track, football, baseball, and cross country at Rome City High School. Survivors include his sons, Edwin ’57, David, and Stanley; daughter, Marilyn Simmons ’58; and 15 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. He lived in Angola, Ind.

James Alley ’36 died November 11. He was a U.S. Navy chaplain and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth. He lived in Miami, Fla.

William Orme ’39 passed away on November 6. He had been a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his wife, Mildred McKay Orme ’36; children, Bill and Janet Brown; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He lived in Greenwood, Ind.

Lisabeth Morgan Hazzard ’42
passed away August 25. She was a U.S. Air Force pilot, during World War II. Survivors include her husband, Harry Hazzard; children, Bill Staples and Georgeanne Nell; step-children, Ed Schneider and Susan Pratt; sister, Judy Campbell, seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She lived in Pharr, Tex.

Laverne Harrod Hubbard ’43 died December 23. She taught at Indianapolis Public School #21. Survivors include her children, Gilbert Hubbard ’72, Gary Hubbard, and Lu Miller, and six grandchildren. She lived in Jeffersonville, Ind.

L. Kenneth Kraft ’43 died January 4. He was a pastor at Wabash Valley Hospital in West Lafayette, Ind. Survivors include his wife, Virginia; sons, Timothy and Randall Kraft ’72; stepson, Randall Cable; nine grandchildren; two great-grandsons; two step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He lived in Lafayette, Ind.

Robert Noel ’44 passed away November 20. He was assistant principal at New Prairie High School in New Carlisle, Ind. He is survived by his wife, Midge Noel. He lived in New Carlisle.

Joy Cochran ’47 died on October 3. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Cochran ’49. Survivors include her sister, Gay Miller, and daughter, Felicia Cochran. She lived in Marine on Saint Croix, Minn.

Donald Fleener ’49 died January 15. He was a retired professor of psychology at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. He served on the UIndy board of trustees and was a past-president of the Alumni Association. Don is survived by his wife, Esther Reidenbach Fleener ’49; four children; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; niece, Susan Wiseman ’71; and brother-in-law, Philip Reidenbach ’44. He lived in Indianapolis.

Virgil Miller ’50 died August 11. Survivors include his wife, Thelma Reeves Miller ’51; children, Patricia Ann Mullens and Ronald, Jerry, and Robert Miller; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Virginia Walker; brother-in-law, Bill Krause; and 20 nieces and nephews. He lived in Mode, Ill.

Floyd Forgey ’51 passed away January 8. He was a World War II veteran and a superintendent at the Indiana Farm Bureau Co-op. He is survived by his daughter, Jayne Croghan; brother, Herschel Forgey; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He lived in Indianapolis.

Charlene Isom Hopkins ’55 died on December 9. She taught elementary education at various schools in Ohio and Indiana. She is survived by her husband, Edward Hopkins; son, Eric; daughter, Emily; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Carolyn; and two cousins. She lived in Frostproof, Fla.

Thomas Potts Sr. ’55 passed away on January 7. He was a retired principal of Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis. Survivors include his wife, Joann King Potts ’57; sons, Thomas Potts Jr. ’79 and Timothy Potts; daughter, Amy Mozingo ’92 ’94; brother, Paul; sister, Opal Kramer; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He lived in Indianapolis.

Jack Nay ’57 died on December 13. He taught high school biology, health, science, physical education, and driver education at Center Grove High School. He was inducted into the UIndy Hall of Fame as a member of the 1953 football team. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Neely Nay ’59, three children, and five grandchildren. He lived in Greenwood, Ind.

James Bruce Jr. ’60 passed away on October 6. He was retired as an engineer from Rockwell International Corporation in Huntsville, Ala. Survivors include his wife, Susanne; son, James Bruce III; daughters, Konnie Lee, Kimberly, and Kristina; two brothers; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He lived in Huntsville.

Berl Carlton ’64 passed away December 20. He was a retired metallurgist from General Motors in Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Carlton ’68. Survivors include his son, Lynn Carlton; sister, Iris Wikoff; brother, George Carlton; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. He lived in Indianapolis.

Tony Zentz ’64 died October 22. He was manager of warehousing transportation at CPS Specialty Markets in Indianapolis. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Zentz; son, Tony Jr.; and daughters, Cameron, Allison, and Eden. He lived in Anderson, Ind.

Neil Delph ’65 died December 26. He was a toolmaker for Delco Remy in Anderson, Ind. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Zurawsky Delph; daughter, Shelley Criss; son, Kent Delph; and three brothers and four grandchildren. He lived in Sarasota, Fla.

Rosella Huff Majors ’68 passed away October 1. She was a registered nurse and worked at Winona, LaRue Carter, and Central State hospitals. She is survived by her children, Christine Ford, Lawrence, William, Franklin, and Dorsey Huff. She lived in Indianapolis.

Lawrence Wever ’68 passed away December 23. He was an industrial chemist at Macdermid in Alexandria, Ind. Survivors include his wife, Diane; mother, Phyllis; children, Joseph, Jennifer, and Christopher; and eight stepchildren and several grandchildren. He lived in Bedford, Ind.
