East is a beast: Residence hall tops competition

The newest dormitory at the University of Indianapolis has been recognized for its elegant and environmentally friendly features in the latest issue of Learning by Design magazine.

East Hall, which opened in August 2009, was named Outstanding Project in the Dormitories/Residence Halls category in the publication’s fall 2010 Special Edition on Green Design and Technology. It is the only Indiana structure featured in the national magazine on education-related architecture, published by the National School Boards Association.

An instant hit on campus with its private rooms aimed at upperclassmen, East Hall was constructed with autoclaved aerated concrete, a sustainable building stone that provides structure, insulation, and fire resistance in a single material. The structure was designed by Fort Wayne-based Design Collaborative.
