UIndy Starts With You: The Campaign for the University of Indianapolis

cover-photoUIndy has always been a community that strives to prepare students to make a difference in the world and reach their potential. That’s why we worked hard together to identify needs and opportunities under the umbrella of the Vision 2030 plan. The result? On October 2, we unveiled the Campaign for the University of Indianapolis with a $50-million goal. With your help, we will broaden access to education, prepare students for careers, and work to address challenges in today’s society. Several former presidents—Dr. Gene E. Sease, Dr. G. Benjamin Lantz, and Dr. Beverley Pitts—joined us at the launch of our Campaign, and I thank them for their generous support.

Campaign_Launch_IMA_0643Special thanks, too, to Gene and Mary Ann Zink for their generous gift to fund an institute that will study causes and solutions to the problem of poverty. The Zink Poverty Institute aligns closely with the University’s service ethic and commitment to community impact. I also want to express my deep appreciation to Indianapolis civic leader, philanthropist, and University trustee Yvonne Shaheen for her belief in the work of the University and for supporting the Campaign. Having already made the largest single gift in our history to support the work of what is now the Shaheen College of Arts & Sciences, she agreed to chair the Campaign.

And Yvonne has now offered to match your gift dollar for dollar, up to a total of $1 million during this fiscal year, which ends on June 30, 2016. If you make a five-year pledge, Yvonne will match your pledge two to one. Your gift, at any level, counts toward our campaign goal and will be used to change the lives of our students and improve our communities. People can change lives. Campaign kickoff a work of art

Campaign_Launch_IMA_1078The University launched the public phase of a $50-million comprehensive campaign at the Indianapolis Museum of Art on the evening of October 2. The event brought together more than 1,000 members of the UIndy community, and concluded with busloads of students enjoying a Homecoming dance in the IMA ballroom. A timeline featuring highlights of the University’s history was the centerpiece of a reception that launched the evening’s events, and guests were invited to write on the timeline to show how and when their own histories intersected with UIndy’s. After dinner, guests moved to the Toby Theater for a program that featured remarks from President Robert Manuel, several former presidents, and a number of other community leaders whose organizations are engaged in partnerships with UIndy.

 

Campaign Focus Areas:

Students

More than 40 percent of our students are first-generation college students, and almost 90 percent receive some form of financial assistance. On campus, students need challenging and engaging programs that will help them to learn and grow, programs that address current issues and inspire engaging work, and research experiences that prepare them for careers and future study.

Faculty

We believe that the best learning happens when students and faculty share a close community. Our 12-to-1 student-faculty ratio ensures that these strong relationships will continue. We must ensure that talented and committed faculty continue to define the UIndy experience, through new endowed chairs, new research, and new professional opportunities.

Community

For our students to learn and develop as teachers, health providers, and community leaders, our facilities must provide inventive, experiential, and cooperative learning. In classrooms and labs, innovation hubs and collaborative spaces, our students discover, learn, and problem-solve, bringing health breakthroughs, learning opportunities, solutions, and service to our communities.

Future

We strive to be both relevant and responsive, always seeking new ways to connect with real-world challenges and identify innovative solutions. To that end, we must invest in new possibilities as they arise, enabling UIndy to engage transformational opportunities that resonate with its mission and are catalysts for a better community, nation, and world.

Zink_newZink Institute to seek solutions to poverty

The campaign launch festivities October 2 included the announcement of a major gift to establish a new institute for the study of poverty. The Gene and Mary Ann Zink Poverty Institute will be active in addressing the pressing public and social issues surrounding poverty while creating formative experiential learning opportunities for students. The funding will endow scholarships, faculty-guided undergraduate and graduate research opportunities, interdisciplinary study, special events, visiting speakers, and faculty development activities. “This interdisciplinary center will convene talent from across the country to study and create interventions that counter the effects of poverty in our communities,” said President Robert Manuel. Gene Zink is chair and CEO of Strategic Capital Partners, the real estate and development firm that partnered with the University in developing the four-story UIndy Health Pavilion, which opened this fall to house the University’s allied health programs, and Greyhound Village, a 480-bed student apartment complex that will open in the fall of 2016.
