1950s

Keith Conrow ’50 died May 21. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is survived by his wife, Edith Allison Conrow ’53; children David, Christine, and Laura; brother, Herbert; four grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. He lived in Franklin, Ind.

Lawrence George ’50 died July 9. He retired from Eli Lilly in the photography/audio-visual services depart-ment. Survivors include his wife, Mary Sue; daughter, Suzanne; sons, Jeff and Brian; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He lived in Indianapolis.

Harley Griffith Jr. ’50 passed away May 11. He was a retired associate director of administrative services at Purdue University in Lafayette. He is survived by his wife, Carol Griffith ’49; and children, Gregory Griffith ’97, Kerry, and Bradley. He lived in Lafayette, Ind.

George C. Grosskopf ’50 died December 30, 2013. George is survived by his sons, Kenneth and Mark, and sister, Charlotte Swander. He lived in Indianapolis.

Mary M. Moore ’50, aunt of Paul B. Harden ’77 and Joetta S. Warthan ’71, died December 7.  She lived in Brazil, Ind.

Claude Louis Sommers ’50 passed away April 13. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He served in numerous positions at Brownstown Central as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and athletics director. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Suzanne King. Survivors include his wife, Darlene; sons, Gale, Mark, and Brian; brother, David; and seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He lived in Brownstown, Ind.

Milton Truesdale ’50 died July 6. He is survived by his wife, Marlene. He lived in Rockford, Ill.

Emma Craig Hoch ’52 passed away January 13. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Bill. She is survived by her husband, Loren Hoch ’50; sons, Jeff, Tom, and Stan; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She lived in Akron, Ohio.

Audrey Walton ’54 died March 29. He served in the U.S. Navy and volunteered in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He was a retired guidance director from Greencastle High School. Survivors include his daughter, Julie Carr; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elnora; daughter, Sherrie; and grandson, Keith. He lived in Greencastle, Ind.

Gerald Stevens ’55 died May 20. He was a retired pastor of Community Church of Hudson in Hudson, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Locke Stevens ’55. He is survived by his daughter, Bettina; son, Warren; granddaughter Lyndsey Weller ’06 ’08 and three other grandchildren; brother-in-law, Daniel Hirth ’59; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Hirth, and  brother, Robert. He lived in De Witt, Iowa.

Jack D. Miller ’56 passed away March 1. He was a retired teacher for Perry Township Schools in Indianapolis. He lived in Franklin, Ind.

Allen M. Morgan ’59, husband of Beverly G. Morgan ’66 and father of Melanie J. Murray ’82, died December 23. He lived in Phoenix, Ariz.

1940s

George Jacobs ’42 died May 29. He was a retired minister of the United Methodist Church. He served in Illinois as a pastor for 40 years, serving Elliot United Brethren, Peoria Bradley Avenue Evangelical United Brethren, Casey EUB, Aurora Bethany United Methodist, and Freeport Faith churches. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Milhouse Jacobs ’39; sister, Clare Stone ’44; brothers-in-law, Phillip Stone ’42 and Paul Milhouse ’32 HD ’50; and sister-in-law, Mary Milhouse ’31. Survivors include his son, Mark Jacobs ’76; daughter-in-law, Janet Jacobs ’76; daughter, Carolyn Hartman ’67; son-in-law, John Hartman, Jr. ’67; daughter, Joyce Erfert ’68 ’70; nieces, Pauline Vermillion ’61 and Mary Hauswald ’54; nephew, Paul Milhouse ’63; nieces-in-law, Martha Jane Milhouse ’65 and Mary Stone ’67; and nephew, Paul “David” Milhouse ’63. George lived in Franklin, Ind.

Olive Kathryn Oliver Truesdale ’43 passed away February 25. She was a retired assistant pastor at University Christian Church in San Diego, Calif. Survivors include four children, nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. She lived in Tucson, Ariz.

Ethel Gould Anglin ’46 died March 28. She was preceded in death by her husband, Olen. She is survived by her son, Lanny; daughter, Judy; and seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She lived in Bradenton, Fla.
Matilda “Olive” Sullivan ’46 died December 31. After 34 years of teaching, she retired in 1978 from Victory Elementary in Peru Community Schools. She is survived by her sons, Dale, Paul, and Frank; daughter, Lois A. Diehl; eight grand-children; 16 great-grand-children; and one great-great-grandson. She lived in Logansport, Ind.

Carrol W. Vertrees ’47 died on June 9. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the European Theater. Carrol was most well known in the region for his work as a columnist at the Post Tribune, where he worked for more than 35 years, beginning as a reporter and ending his career as a member of the editorial staff and columnist. He continued to write a weekly column well after retirement for the Post Tribune and Odon Journal. Survivors include his wife, Martha J. Vertrees ’47; daughters, Vicki V. Ward ’73 and Rebecca Owen; and sister-in-law, Janet Eisendrath ’46. He was preceded in death by sisters-in-law Joanne Lane ’53 and Othella G. Poling ’35. He lived in Hobart, Ind.

Patricia A. Koons ’48 died April 19. She is survived by her children, David Wayne Koons, Bonnie Ortiz-Koons ’74,  Mary Deeds, and Karen Dahlquist; nine grand-children; several great-grandchildren; brother, James Harper; and sister, Joan Brian. She lived in Macy, Ind.

Dr. Paul S. Alexander ’49, husband of A. Lucille Alexander ’49, father of Dorothy L. Wade ’81, ’84, brother of Raymond L. Alexander ’52 and brother-in-law of Nancy C. Alexander ’52, died June 17. Other survivors include brother-in-law Keith A. Brown ’51, sister-in-law Margaret B. Morrison ’46, niece Carol Sue Bossingham ’75, nephew Derek A. Brown ’79, niece-in-law Debbie S. Brown ’79, ’81 and great-niece Cara E. Brown ’09. He was preceded in death by father-in-law Rev. Willard F. Brown ’20 (former trustee), sister-in-law Laura E. “Effie” Brown ’54 (former trustee), and brother-in-law John Morrison. He lived in Greenwood, Ind.

Betty Moore Browning ’49 died March 21. She is survived by her son, David William Browning; sister, Mary Alice Moore Eckert ’44;  brother, Benton Acton Moore; and one grandchild, four nieces, and three nephews. She lived in Mooresville, Ind.

1930s

Elmer L. Kirts ’37 died on March 20. He is survived by his three daughters, Cassie Huck,  Judy Allred, and Beverly Zehr; five grandchildren; and six great-grand-children Elmer lived in Cullman, Ala.

Ruth E. Schlegel ’39 has passed away. She was an elementary teacher for many years, retiring in 1976. Survivors include daughters, Nycha Schlegel and Nancy Brock; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She lived in Muncie, Ind.

Carleton Franks ’39 died March 13. He was a retired school administrator. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Gehlbach Franks ’39. He lived in Indianapolis.
