Happy birthday, Ace!

Ace, the greyhound sculpture given to UIndy by alumnus Orvall McCleary ’49 and dedicated at last year’s Homecoming, celebrated his first birthday this year, which naturally called for a birthday cake. The layer cake, made in the shape of a big dog bone, took two bakers, Joy Polk and Chef Dan Phillips, 16 hours to complete.

The chocolate, vanilla, and yellow confection, at three feet long and eight inches high, weighed nearly 200 pounds and required 64 eggs, 20 pounds of sugar, 30 pounds of flour, and 11 pounds of Snausage. (OK, we made up that last part.

And what party for a one-year-old doesn’t end with photos of the birthday boy with cake all over his face? The Student Alumni Association organized the Homecoming Week party to celebrate the first anniversary of the mascot’s installation in Schwitzer Student Center.
