UIndy Director of Athletics Dr. Sue Willey ’75 was announced as the 2009–10 Division II Central Region Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Willey just completed her seventh year at the helm of the Greyhound program and led UIndy to yet another impressive Directors’ Cup finish. The Hounds ranked 17th among all Division II schools, the sixth top-20 finish in her tenure.
“This award is a testament to our coaches and administrators and all of their hard work,” Willey says. “This is a departmental award, so congratulations to every person at UIndy who strives to make the school a model Division II institution. We have a very special group of hard-working and wonderful people here and I am most thankful for each one.”
In Willey’s 35-year tenure on campus, she has been part of the growth of Greyhound athletics as a student-athlete, coach, and administrator. A 1993 inductee into the UIndy Athletic Hall of Fame, she earned an incredible 19 letters and 11 MVP awards in her four-year playing career and was Female Athlete of the Year from 1972 to 1975. She began her coaching career at her alma mater after graduating cum laude. The versatile Willey coached 23 years at UIndy, directing 43 different teams in five sports. She was GLVC softball Coach of the Year in 1989, and her softball teams earned national academic honors in 1996 and 1997.
